Designated Subject Credential in Adult Education
The Designated Subjects Adult Education Teaching Credential focuses on the continuous learning essential for all individuals in an effective, dynamic educational unit or organization. It allows one to explore central concepts and processes in adult learning, barriers to adult learning, evaluation strategies in adult education, and recent research on human learning. This credential is for anyone teaching in an adult learning environment. This credential is for those candidates seeking employment with a correctional institution, community college, private secondary, or post-secondary environment.
Credential Requirements (9 units)
The Designated Subjects Adult Education Teaching Credential Program equips educators for specialized roles in adult education. Admission requires a high school diploma or equivalent and at least three years of verifiable work experience related to the credential's industry sector for the Preliminary Credential. One year must equal 1,000 clock hours, and the experience can be full-time or part-time, paid or unpaid. At least one year of work experience must have been completed within the past five years, or two years within the last ten years. For guidance, applicants can contact the Credential Processing Office at the Jim and Judy Watson College of Education Student Services. The Preliminary Credential, valid for three years, is the first step for those entering the field. It is based on documented work experience and is required to advance to the Clear Credential, as mandated by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
To obtain the Clear Credential, candidates must complete the following ECTS coursework, meet US Constitution and Health Education requirements, obtain CPR certification, and complete two years of teaching under the Preliminary Credential. This program offers a structured pathway for educators to enhance their qualifications and make effective contributions to adult education.

- Valid CPR card or certificate (Hands-on training covering Adult, Child, & Infant).
- Two years of successful teaching based on the Preliminary Designated Subjects Adult Education Teaching Credential in the subject(s) listed on the credential. This is defined as teaching of a minimum of one course in each of four terms within the three-year period of validity of the preliminary adult education teaching credential.
