Certificate in Dietetic Internship

The Dietetic Internship is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education of Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).  The Certificate in Dietetic Internship allows interns to complete the 1,000 supervised-practice hours, under the approved preceptors at selected rotation sites, for eligibility to complete the registration exam administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).  The graduates must also complete a graduate degree and other program requirements along with the certificate in order for the certificate (Verification Statement for Dietetic Internship, VSDI) can be issued by the Dietetic Internship (DI) Director.  The Dietetic Internship Director will submit the documents to CDR after completion of the certificate program and a masters degree for interns to register for the certification exam.  Successful completion of the certification exam allows the graduate to practice as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).

The 1,000 supervised-practice hours may be completed in 11-months as a full time intern or 22-months as a part time intern.  In addition to 1,000 unpaid supervised-practice hours, interns are required to attend a weekly didactic course under HSCI 6753A & 6753B (3.5 units each) for the semesters they are completing their supervised-practice hours.  The preceptors of the site will supervise the intern and provide a rating of their completed work at the end of the rotation at their site.  There is a one-time internship fee of $2,500 for program expenses to be charged at the start of the certificate program.

Certificates may be earned by regularly matriculated or extended learning students and denote successful completion of a prescribed program of study designed to:

  1. impart specified professional/vocational/career competencies; or
  2. produce mastery of the content of a sub-field of an academic major (discipline); or
  3. provide exposure to the range of materials in a traditional or emerging interdisciplinary field.

Certain certificate programs contain 6000-level courses as requirements and/or electives. These 6000-level courses may not be taken by undergraduate students. Candidates must receive two-thirds of their certificate-applicable credit from the university. The transferring of credit or the substitution of courses may occur only after application to the appropriate campus authority.
