EDES 5001. Race and Racism in the U.S. Educational System. Units: 3

Introduces the concepts of race, ethnicity, and racism along with their impact on legislation, policies, and practices of the education system in the United States. Students make connections between the historical, sociocultural, and political contexts of racism with educational inequities and the foundation of Ethnic Studies.

EDES 5002. History of Ethnic Studies Education. Units: 3

Students examine the Ethnic Studies movements and Ethnic Studies education as a field of study. Students review the existing empirical research and learn both the history of Ethnic Studies movements and benefits of Ethnic Studies in both K-12 and higher education settings.

EDES 5003. Pedagogies and Methodologies of Ethnic Studies Education. Units: 3

This course provides an overview of Ethnic Studies methodologies and pedagogical practices that students adapt to in K-12, community, and higher education contexts.

EDES 5004. Creating the Future of Ethnic Studies Education. Units: 3

This course prepares students to navigate the contested terrain of ethnic studies education through praxis. Students move from theory to practice by considering the various tools available in Ethnic Studies Education and integrate them with other technologies and methods to develop educational approaches that interrupt and aim to dismantle systemic racism.
