EDMD 5101. Teaching & Learning Methods in Spanish Multilingual Settings:. Units: 3

This graduate-level course is designed to provide prospective bilingual teachers with the essential competencies to teach in Multilingual Spanish settings. Its primary goal is to prepare graduate students for teaching in bilingual settings by examining diverse program models for bilingual instruction, teaching strategies for content areas and reading, materials selection, and assessment techniques. The course requires a prerequisite of 20 hours of fieldwork in schools, where students will have the opportunity to apply what they learn in class.

EDMD 5102. Cultural Proficiency in Spanish Multilingual Settings. Units: 3

This graduate-level course delves into the intersection of education and cultural proficiency in relation to Latinx students in multilingual settings. Drawing upon current research and theoretical frameworks, student teachers will critically analyze the diverse cultural, linguistic, and historical backgrounds of Latinx students and explore strategies for fostering inclusive and equitable learning environments. The course examines key topics such as culturally proficient pedagogy, culturally relevant and responsive curriculum, community engagement, and social justice advocacy. Through readings, case studies, interactive discussions, and practical lesson planning, student teachers will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to enhance their cultural proficiency and create empowering educational experiences for Latinx students.
